Gotong Royong need not be an organized event

Gotong Royong /Communal work is when a gathering takes place to accomplish a task or to hold a competition. The Spirit of Gotong Royong is originated from Java Indonesia and the conception of sociality is familiar to large parts of Malaysia.

Gotong Royong can begin at the modest scale from our very own family, between our neighbour or even just on your own as individual during the week-end or any evening. It need not be organised by the local council, ADUN, RA or any other body… So let us do our part as a landscape and environment loving resident by cleaning and trimming your own yard and common area surrounding you regularly. These eventually will turn your home into a most well-kept community in Taman Putra Prima that all 8A residents are very much cherished and proud of.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” –Margaret Mead

  1. Nowadays, city folks are caring for their own house only. Anything outside is not their business. This is norm everywhere around the world.

  2. Nice shot! thanks for uploading the photograph. Gotong royong works need not to be organized or fix a date. Its an activity in part of our life that can do it at anytime. As simple as pick up a rubbish when you jog at the playground, clean your front gate and common area when you are watching the sunset or sunrise.

    Anthropologist Robert A. Hahn writes:

Javanese culture is stratified by social class and by level of adherence to Islam. …Traditional Javanese culture does not emphasize material wealth. …There is respect for those who contribute to the general village welfare over personal gain. And the spirit of gotong royong, or volunteerism, is promoted as a cultural value

Thank You RA Treasurer Aaron and Committee member Ng Kuo Sin for joining me in a Gotong Royong event on 16/6/2013 (Sunday morning) jointly organised by Ahli Majlis Pulanthran service center and Taman Mas RA for the battle against dengue / aedes mosquito that took away 2 lives in Taman Mas recently.
